FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MOVIE STAR, INC. ENTERS ADJACENT BUSINESS ARENA
Establishes Meant to Be Division for Loungewear and Daytime Dresses
New York, NY – July 19, 1999 -- MOVIE STAR, INC. (ASE: MSI) today announced its establishment of a new division, “Meant To Be”, which will design, merchandise, produce and sell loungewear and daytime dresses. It has hired the design, merchandising and sales team that built this business at Sita, Inc., with Herb Roth spearheading this new enterprise for Movie Star.
According to Mel Knigin, Movie Star’s President & CEO, “Historically, the bulk of our business is shipped during our first two fiscal quarters (July-December). The Meant To Be styles, fabrics, and most notably its prints, which are primarily shipped in the January to June timeframe will contribute to building our business in the second half of the year. Herb, along with his group of creative and accomplished design and sales associates, were responsible for making this a multi-million business at Sita and bring the know-how, relationships, and confidence to do the same or more at Movie Star. While drawing upon Movie Star’s financial and operational resources, the new division will have a large degree of autonomy.”
The merchandise mix features a full range of loungewear encompassing long sleeved caftans to sleeveless sundresses. “While woven knit sleepwear and embroidered chambray muumuus accentuate the line, the Meant To Be fashion story is all about prints,” according to Herb Roth, President of the new Movie Star division. Fabrics include cotton, rayon challis, sand crepe and voile on which are printed color rich patterns for all ages, tastes and preferences. Our initial line will have new treatments of animal skin prints, Indonesian batiks and tropical retro designs as well as the always popular romantic florals whose popularity defies changing fashion moods. Beyond fashion, our customer appreciates the multi-purpose comfort of this loungewear which is wearable at home and outdoors.”
For starters, Meant To Be garments will be sold at department stores. A parallel private label program for chains is being contemplated. The Meant To Be business plan calls for importing finished packages from overseas. Initial shipments are scheduled for January 2000. In closing, Mr. Knigin pointed out, “Meant To Be, which primarily ships in the January to June period, enhances our current loungewear business of fleece, velour and terry loungewear lines, which are big sellers during the July- December period. We have every confidence that Herb and his team will make an important contribution to the continued growth of our Company.”
